The Site Management Safety Training Scheme Refresher (SMSTS-R) course is for delegates who have previously passed the full Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course or subsequent refresher course, and can provide proof of attendance.

Joining Instructions

The refresher course is only for delegates who have previously passed the five-day construction Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) or subsequent refresher course, and hold a valid SMSTS certificate. Evidence must be provided to the training provider of their eligibility. Failure to attend the refresher course prior to the expiry of an existing certificate will require delegates to re-enter the scheme by completing the full SMSTS course if they wish to remain in the scheme.The minimum entry requirement is a good understanding of spoken and written English.

Who the course is aimed at

It aims to bring health and safety knowledge up to date, as well as giving a thorough overview of the legislative changes and their impact in the workplace. The course includes a wide range of topics, many building on the previous five-day course programme.

Course Agenda

All updated health, safety, welfare and environmental legislation which affects them in their role as a managing safety, New guidance and industry best practice Their duties and responsibilities with regards to health, safety, welfare and the environment.Current Health & Safety legislation, Management of Health & Welfare. It also highlights the need for risk management in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.


Assessment.Assessment will be by a compulsory exam paper at the end of the course. It is also expected that delegates interact during the course.Examination.The examination paper is compulsory and consists of 25 questions, selected by CITB, covering all aspects of the course.The examination pass mark is 80% (28 out of 35). The paper consists of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 short written questions. There are 5 safety critical questions in each exam paper. The delegate must get all 5 of these questions correct to pass the exam. The multiple choice questions are worth 1 point each, whilst written questions can score between 1-3 marks.The examination lasts for 30 minutes and must be completed within this time.

Can the course be failed?

Exam failure Resit.Where a delegate has achieved between 71%77% (25, 26 or 27 out of 35) in the examination or has achieved the 80% pass rate but failed the safety critical questions, the delegate may re-sit the examination. Should a delegate fail the re-sit, they will be offered to take the SMSTS-R course again.When a delegate scores less than 69% (24 correct answers out of 35) in the final examination, the delegate must attend the full SMSTS course again before they are allowed to re-sit the examination.
